The World is NOT Black or White

I teach color for many reasons.

One reason, buried deep and not often expressed, is that I think the three- dimensional world of color is a metaphor for life.

Color is beautifully complex. People are beautifully complex. Life is beautifully complex. Nothing is ever as simple as Black or White. That's why I love Color.

When you learn to see color in all its many variations then you begin to understand that everything - and everyone - is constantly moving between darkness and light.

That is why, on a very personal level, teaching color helps me dance between dark and light.

KOLORMONDO PRO Kickstarter Project

There are just a few days left to snag your first edition of Nicoline Kinch's Kolormondo Pro on Kickstarter.

The campaign is funded. Printing has started. If you back the project NOW you will get yours by Christmas!

I purchased my first Kolormondo a few years ago. I now have a number of them in different sizes hanging out in my classroom in Portland, Oregon.

I was so thrilled to have an easy-to-pack 3D model to take along when I teach that I visited Nicoline and her dog Cassis in the seaside town of Trosa, Sweden while traveling this past summer.

It was wonderful to spend some time with a fellow Color Explorer and see that she is as committed to color education as I am!

The new Kolormondo Pro has 570 colors and is designed for use with the Natural Color System (NCS) - the Swedish color specification system used in many European countries.

Be one of the first to get the latest color globe in the collection! Contribute to the Kickstarter project!

Hurry! The campaign ends on Monday, November 21st.

Color Explorer Central
Now Open!

Little by little, I am morphing my old Smashing Color website into a resource center for learning about both the art and science of color.

As part of that effort, I am thrilled to announce that the beta version of the "outfitter" center for color explorers is now open.

The first selection of products features a few of my hand-picked favorites for teaching and exploring 21st Century Color.

Prices range from free to just under $100. You can purchase many of the items at your local stores but I've included the Amazon links in case you can't find something close to home.

Go to Color Explorer Central and scroll down to see what's on the "shelves."

Photos of a Color Explorer

The last four months were filled with travels to France, Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, Austria and England to teach and visit with friends in both the world of polymer and the world of color.

It all started with the EuroSynergy Conference in Bordeaux. Then off to Chartres to see the cathedral. I thought I crossed that off my bucket list but not really. I will need to go back!

At some point I might write about all the adventures but in the meantime I posted a few photos on my blog.  Can you guess where I am?

Color Explorers in the Classroom: Collage

The summer classes at the VIBE of Portland classroom were a smashing success. One of our collaborators, VIBE program director Leslie Tucker, sent me some photos from the collage class.

For one of the projects, students made a 2D color collage from magazine clippings, mixed seven colors in acrylic paint to match, painted wooden pieces and then made a 3D collage.

How old were they? Between 7 and 9!

Chicago Workshop in Feb

I'll be guiding students through my first Smashing Color Globe-Trotter class at the Fine Line Art Center in Saint Charles, Illinois at the end of February.

If you live in the Chicago area, I invite you to get out of the cold and gray for a couple of days and join us as we travel the many worlds of color!
